When the Torch comes to Totnes

Wednesday, 18 April 2012

The Olympic Torch is due to pass through Totnes on Sunday 20th May, the second day of its nationwide travels on the road to London.

To celebrate the event, and get everyone in the mood, Tone Leisure, Totnes and District Swimming Pool and the Army Cadet Centre at Borough Park are holding the Tone Leisure Olympic Super-Teams event from 9:00am.

Family and friends can participate in teams of 5 made up of representatives from different ages (1 under 12yrs/ 1 under 14yrs/ 1 male aged 18-39yrs/ 1 female aged 18-39yrs/ 1 over 40yrs) in 7 fun events based around the Olympic theme. Tasks and challenges will not be too arduous, but will light the competitor in you. Events include a 1 length swim, a high jump, a standing long jump, a sports hall sprint, an indoor javelin challenge (safer than it sounds!) a 22 calibre shoot at the cadet centre range and an all family relay on the park grasping an Olympic Torch Baton created by our Giant Camps holiday activities children. All events will be against the clock and tape measure, not actually racing against other teams, and will all take place indoors apart from the relay.

All the times and distances achieved by the team members will be added together to find the winning team who will receive a trophy and Totnes Pavilion and Totnes and District Pool membership vouchers.

The start time of 9:00am is planned to allow plenty of time for the participants to walk to a suitable view point on Station Road to cheer the torch through on its London journey.

Kevin Teague, centre manager for Tone said: “The passing of the Olympic Torch through Totnes is a once in a lifetime event and we couldn’t let it pass without something to celebrate it. Our Olympic Super-Teams Event is limited to 14 teams and we would encourage families to get their entry forms in early.”
