On Sunday 26th September, locals Kevin Bere and Debbie Rugg will be in sole possession of a swimming lane at Wellington Sports Centre while they attempt to achieve a 22 mile swim, the equivalent of the English Channel, in support of the charity Aspire.
The couple contacted the centre to see whether it would be possible to attempt the challenge in one day, rather than over the 12 week period allowed by the challenge.
Debbie, 21 and a recent graduate of the University of Kent, was the University’s Swimming Team Chair, although since returning home she has been concentrating on a weight loss programme and to improve her fitness.
Kevin, 23 is a surveyor for local firm LewisBrown. Not a natural swimmer, Kevin has grown up with rugby and football and found an interest in triathlons. Last year he competed in the Lakeland Challenge with two local lads and hopes to do the London Marathon next year for Aspire.
Aspire is a charity that supports people with spinal injuries become more independent. Debbie’s family has friends who could benefit from the charity, one having been paralysed in a rugby accident and another suffering from sclerosis. Kevin’s interest in rugby makes him a supported too. The couple hopes to raise £2000 from their swim and invite members of the public to make a donation via their “justgiving” website at http://www.justgiving.com/Debbie-Rugg
