Dance your way to fitness

Monday, 14 March 2011

A new initiative launching at Wellington Sports Centre, one of the Taunton facilities managed by social enterprise Tone, is bringing Dance in its many forms to the centre.

New sessions for Adult Beginners, running on Tuesday from 2.00-3.00pm, will be introducing locals to Dance styles including: Freestyle, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Salsa, Disco, Charleston, Bollywood, Michael Jackson and  Mix and Match.  Partners are not necessary for these sessions, so it is also a good opportunity to meet new people.

Louise Bulmer, Active Lifestyles Officer for Tone said:

“Dance is underrated as an exercise format. It is great for improving confidence, balance, posture, memory, muscle strength and co-ordination. Even if you have never danced before you should come along, I know you will have fun.”

Dance sessions are being run in partnership with NHS Somerset and TakeArt Dance Company. Sessions even provide after exercise refreshments included in the £3.85 per session price.

Quote from participants from sessions:

'This dance class is unique, it's fun, it’s improved my suppleness and strength and we have a laugh'

'To be honest I didn't think this dancing would be for me but I can really feel the benefits now and I enjoy it a lot'

‘ It's been wonderful to find this group. I hate the gym and in this group I feel really included and welcome and it's fun. I laugh a lot'

'I feel re-vitalised and really enjoy the freedom to express myself'

‘ It's very different to anything I've ever done and a very rich experience’

‘ Some exercises sessions make you feel straight jacketed this one makes you feel free'

Keri Parr, Operations Manager at the site said:

“We know that the cost of anything new in today’s economic climate has to be weighed up very carefully, so in March we are putting on one date which is absolutely free of charge - 29th March. We hope that people will take advantage of the offer and meet people who have seen the benefits of attending these classes.”

There will be no session on Tuesday 22nd March.
