Tone tackles stigma with Time to Change

Monday, 3 October 2011

Tone, the social enterprise and charitable leisure trust that helps people to feel good, is supporting the Time to Change campaign (stamping out mental illness discrimination) by providing an afternoon of activities at Wellsprings Leisure Centre.  The event is one of a series of events being provided across the county to support the Time to Change campaign, as a result of collaboration between NHS Somerset, Tone Leisure, Mind in Taunton and West Somerset, Rethink, local support groups and local authority leisure services.

The afternoon of activities taking place on Monday 10th October from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at Wellsprings Leisure Centre will include taster sessions of hot cycling, circuit exercise, fitball, an introduction to running fitness, health walking, boxercise and kettlercise.

The event will encourage people to “get moving” to boost their state of mind and to bring people with or without mental health problems together to help change attitudes and stamp out mental illness discrimination.  The activity afternoon is part of England’s biggest campaign to end mental health stigma called “Time for Change” which is supported nationally by Somerset cricketer Marcus Trescothick.

As well as providing activities, Tone is raising awareness of the campaign through information in its facilities and online about mental health.

Melissa McCarthy, Health Development Officer for Tone said “We often hear about how being active can help keep our bones strong and our heart healthy but the benefit to our mental health is just as important.  Feeling good in ourselves is often one of the very first things that people notice when they start being more physically active.  Tone’s strapline “Helping you feel good” is so fitting with the message to get moving for your mental health- we want people to come and get moving at this free event at Wellsprings Leisure Centre to feel good and end discrimination”.
