Please read the attached comments from a parent who recently participated in the

Tone Leisure Big Lottery Funded MEND 7-13's programme at Wellsprings Leisure Centre.

"I can't begin to tell you how apprehensive I was about signing my daughter up for MEND following an advertisement in the newspaper. The advert was targeting families where parents and/or their children had expressed any concern about the child's weight, health or fitness level. This rang bells in my ears as my daughter had been making negative comments about her physique for some time. I felt a duty to her to improve her self esteem at such a tender age. I made some in depth enquiries and found MEND to be a lottery funded initiative providing positive education and physical activity for kids just like mine! Those needing a helping hand and some guidance on making healthy choices for a happy and healthy future. AND, IT WAS FREE!!!!

During the 10 week programme I met a diverse range of people all with a common goal - to help our kids improve their health. We laughed and we cried, but we all reached our goals together. I feel we have made friends for life at MEND. The kids got on famously and enjoyed structured activity giving them 2 hours of exercise a week with the emphasis being placed on having fun. As parents we learnt about refined and un-refined foods, fats and sugars and how to make healthier choices in restaurants and supermarkets. We learnt about the types of activity our kids do and what effects these activities have on their health. In addition, there were many useful hand-outs and recipes. The kids have been given the know-how to make healthy choices for themselves too.

As a parent, I know we want to shield and protect our kids, so if you too are hesitating, please don't. Pick up the phone and speak to the organisers who I am sure will give you the re-assurance you need.

MEND has helped me and my daughter to understand why she had those worries and how to over-come them. Together we are stronger, fitter and happier. Thank you MEND."
