Peter Bretherton, recently elected president of the Lawn Tennis Association is travelling to Somerset on Wednesday 9th March to meet with Taunton Tennis Club’s Head Coach Simon Woodhill. The visit will allow Mr Bretherton to tour the facilities as well as watch the best U10’s in the South West play tennis.
Elected in December 2010 for a two year period, Mr Bretherton will be leading the LTA into new territory. His appointment coincides with a change in LTS policy from supporting elite tennis to returning to grass routes tennis and mass participation.
“Over the last few years, we’ve laid foundations for growth, and now we can build on that by focusing our attention on getting more people playing and enjoying our sport, as well as continuing our work to identify and support the development of talented youngsters.” (quoted from LTA website)
The visit in March also coincides with the launching of 2 new classes running every Monday from 21st March- Beginners Adult Tennis Coaching (7-8pm) and Men’s Tennis Coaching and Matchplay (2-4pm). Sessions are charged at £2.50 per person but are free to Tennis Ace Members. Both new classes promote confidence, muscle strength, co-ordination, balance, cardio fitness and are FUN!
These 2 new classes follow on from the introduction earlier this year of Cardio Tennis, a new fitness class which is a high energy workout using drills suitable for tennis beginners as well as advanced players.
Kerry Quirk, Tennis Manager for Tone said:
“It is great to see how tennis is developing. This is not just a captivating sport but a great fitness regime. The new classes we are bringing out this year are supported by NHS Somerset and financially supported by activeSomerset (Somerset PCT). We will also support any initiative we can to involve more people in this excellent sport.”
